Available Scholarships & Requirements for the 2013-2014 Academic Year 


APPLICATION DEADLINE:  March 21, 2013

ACE Memorial Fund (in memory of Aaron Casey Engler)

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Desire a career in the mental health field
  • Essay submission:  "Why Obtaining a Degree and Having a Career in the Mental Health Field is Important to You"
  • Worked or volunteered a minimum of 20 annual hours in a mental health facility or for an organization that provides mental health care to their clients. Include details about this in your essay!
  • Letter of recommendation from this employer or organization
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection.  May follow student to NAU-Yuma or UA-Yuma

Typical Award: Twelve credits- up to $1,500.00 a year/Six credits- up to $750.00 a year/Three credits- up to $375.00 a year

AWC Alumni Association Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher 
  • All majors
  • Essay submission:  “How has your attendance at AWC changed your life?”  (approx. 300 words)
  • Must be willing to join AWC Alumni Association after graduation
  • Scholarship is renewable with reselection and reapplication

Typical Award:  up to $500.00

 AWC Massage Therapy Club Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Must be accepted to the Massage Therapy Program
  • Essay submission: "Why Do I Want to be a Massage Therapist" is required
  • Scholarship is not renewable
  • Cannot be received in conjunction with Bridget's Gift Scholarship

Typical Award:     up to $500.00

Backus Honor Memorial Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student who has completed at least 24 credit hours 
  • Recipient must meet all of the AWC Honors Program requirements (see AWC website)
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Participate in Honors Program curriculum *
  • Student may not be a Physical Education Major
  • Scholarship is renewable with reselection and reapplication

 *If you are not an Honors student and meet the criteria please check with the Honors Program about joining.  Enrollment in Honors must be in progress before scholarship is awarded

Typical Award:          up to $1,000.00

Ben Nakasawa Memorial Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Majoring in Agriculture, Animal Science, Agriculture-Business, or other related field of study
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Priority is given to freshman students
  • Priority is given to reapplicants and is designed to follow student up to four years.  Recipients of this award are responsible for reapplying to be considered 
  • Essay submission: "Why Agriculture is My Career of Choice" is required
  • Must have graduated from Yuma or La Paz County high school

Typical award:           up to $1,000.00

Bridget’s Gift Scholarship 

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Accepted into the AWC Licensed Massage Therapy Program
  • Essay submission: "Why I Want to Be a Massage Therapist" is required
  • Scholarship is not renewable

Typical award:           up to $1,000.00

 Charles C. Lackey Memorial Scholarship

  • Recipient must be either a full-time or part-time AWC employee
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Enrolled in a degree program taking nine credit hours or more with a course level of 100 or above at AWC, NAU-Yuma, or UA-Yuma
  • Student must demonstrate financial need and have been denied a FAFSA Pell Grant
  • Essay submission (400 words minimum): "What Challenges Have You Faced Obtaining an Education, and What Have You Done to Overcome Them?” is required   
  • Scholarship is renewable with priority given to reapplicants for one year

Typical Award:          up to $500.00

Charles Ennis Rice Agriculture Scholarship

  • Full-time or part-time AWC student or University of Arizona student
  • Declared Major in Agriculture
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Renewable with reselection and reapplication

Typical Award: up to $1,000.00 for AWC students, up to $2,500.00 for UA-Yuma students

 Dr. Larry McDonald Memorial Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Declared English Major  

Typical Award:          up to $500.00

 Daniel and Elizabeth (Neahr) O’Neill Memorial Endowed Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • U.S Citizen preferred but not required
  • First-generation college student and/or has financial need as determined by FAFSA Pell Grant is preferred, but not required
  • Essay Submission: “How Do You Believe Your Education Will Benefit You, Your Family, and Your Community?” is required 
  • Scholarship is renewable with reselection and reapplication

Typical Award:          up to $600.00

 Daniel J. Fisher Memorial Welding Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Declared Welding Major
  • Graduate of a Yuma or La Paz County high school
  • Student must demonstrate financial need according to FAFSA Pell Grant
  • Essay submission:  “Why Do You Need This Scholarship to Complete Your Education?” is required  
  • Priority given to students from a single parent family. Please indicate this on the application question: “Other information you would like us to consider” in order to qualify
  • Scholarship is renewable with priority given to reapplicants

Typical award:             up to $1,200.00

 Dave Kohut Memorial Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Declared Art Major
  • Must be enrolled in a photography class
  • GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Must also be a Yuma County resident
  • Student must demonstrate financial needIndicate financial need in application question: “Other information you would like us to consider” in order to qualify
  • Renewable with reselection and reapplication

Typical Award:          up to $125.00 for photography supplies per semester

 David L. Baughman Memorial Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Declared Math Major
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Student must demonstrate financial needIndicate financial need in application question: “Other information you would like us to consider” in order to qualify
  • Scholarship is not renewable

Typical Award:          up to $300.00 (AWC bookstore voucher only)

Dee Jay Carr Memorial Fund Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Student must have been denied a FAFSA Pell Grant
  • Preference is given to first year students with a declared major in Nursing or Construction Trades, or students on an AWC Athletic Team Scholarship
  • Renewable with reselection and reapplication

Typical Award:          up to $1,200.00

Diana Ortiz Valenzuela Radiology Technology Memorial Scholarship

  • Second year AWC student (30 or more credits)
  • Student must be accepted to in the Radiology Technology Program 
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Member of the Radiologic Technology Club
  • Involved in community service activities.  Please indicate this on application
  • Essay submission: "Why I Want to Be a Radiologic Technologist and My Future Career Goals" is required

Typical Award:          up to $400.00

 Dorothy A. Taber Endowment Scholarship

  • Second year AWC student (30 or more credits)
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Student must demonstrate financial needIndicate financial need in application question: “Other information you would like us to consider” in order to qualify
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and selection and may follow student to NAU-Yuma or UA-Yuma 

Typical Award:          up to $1,000.00

 Dustin Zecha Memorial Scholarship

  • A full-time AWC TV Production student
  • Must submit a 2-5 minute video production about "Why TV Services is the Career for Me" to the Foundation Office  

Typical Award:          up to $500.00

Earnest Sr. and Betty Lopez Memorial Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Declared Welding Major
  • Must be a high school graduate within the last two years from a Yuma or La Paz County
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication for two consecutive years or until graduation from program 

Typical Award:          up to $500.00

 El Toro Bowl Sponsorship "Agriculture Major" Scholarship

 

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher 
  • Declared Agriculture Major
  • Essay Submission:  "How will you support your community after you complete your education?"
  • US Resident
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

El Toro Bowl Sponsorship “Business Major” Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Declared Business Major
  • Essay Submission: "How Will You Support Your Community After You Complete Your Education?" is required
  • U.S. Resident
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

El Toro Bowl Sponsorship “Law Enforcement” Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Majoring in Law Enforcement related field
  • U.S Resident
  • Essay Submission: "How Will You Support Your Community After You Complete Your Education?" is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:          up to $1,000.00

  El Toro Bowl Sponsorship “Military Family” Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher 
  • U.S. Resident
  • This scholarship is to be awarded to military personnel (Veteran or Active Duty Military) or an immediate family member (spouse or child).  Please indicate military relationship in application question: "Other areas you would like us to consider" in order to qualify
  • Essay Submission: "How Will You Support Your Community After You Complete Your Education?" is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

  • Full-time AWC student

  • Full-time AWC student

Family & Community Education Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 2.5 - 3.5 (higher and lower will not be considered)
  • Declared Family Studies, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, or any major related to Family & Consumer Sciences
  • Essay Submission: "Describe Your Course of Study, Educational Goals, and Why Majoring in This Field is Important to You." is required
  • Scholarship may follow student to NAU-Yuma or UA-Yuma
  • Must be a Yuma County Resident
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:          up to $500.00

 Family Studies Scholarship

  • Any AWC student
  • Declared Family Studies Major

Typical Award:        up to $200.00

Fern Drysdale Memorial Scholarship Endowment

  • Any  female AWC student
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher required for maintaining award or reapplication
  • Essay Submission:  "Why is Obtaining an Education Important to You?" is required 
  • This endowment was established to support women returning to college.  Priority will be given to female, nontraditional students seeking an education.  However, all female students are encouraged to apply!
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection.

 Typical Award:    up to $500.00

George H. and Leila H. Payne Scholarship

  • AWC student enrolled for minimum of nine credit hours
  • Student must have a physical disability (Proof of physical disabilities must be established with AWC)
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher

Typical Award: up to $1,000.00

Gonzalo D. and Lucila Huerta Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Declared Welding Major
  • Must be a high school graduate within the last two years from a Yuma or La Paz County
  • Scholarship is renewable for up to two consecutive years with reapplication and reselection 

Typical Award:  up to $1,000.00

Herb Morris Basketball Scholarship

  • AWC Basketball player (will be verified by Athletics Department)
  • Student must be a Yuma resident

Typical Award:  up to $1,000.00

 Inman Family “Career and Technical Education” Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Declared Major in: Agriculture, Administration of Justice, Construction Trades & Technical Programs, Culinary Arts, Licensed Massage Therapy, Nursing (must be accepted into the Nursing Program) Public Safety (Fire, Police, EMT, etc...), or Radiology Technology
  • Student must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must be a Yuma or La Paz County high school graduate that is involved in extracurricular activities (sports excluded)
  • Essay Submission: “Describe the Experiences that Have Influenced Your Decision to Pursue Your Intended Career Path” is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  up to $1,500.00

Inman Family “General Studies” Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Declared General Studies Major
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must be a Yuma or La Paz County high school graduate
  • Involved in extracurricular activities (sports excluded)
  • Essay Submission: “Describe the Experiences that Have Influenced Your Decision to Attend College and What Career Path are You Considering” is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  up to $1,500.00

Janice Fife Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Declared Education Major
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  up to $1,000.00

Jimmie Ben Automotive Memorial Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 2.5
  • Declared Automotive Technology Major
  • Essay Submission: "Why Do You Want to Become an Auto Mechanic" is required. 
  • Scholarship is not renewable

Typical Award:  up to $350.00

 Karl A. and Alma B. Dennis Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Declared Major in Construction Trades or Engineering, or has been accepted into the Nursing or Radiology Technology Program  
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be a graduate of a Yuma area high school
  • Scholarship is renewable for a second year with compliance, reapplication, and notification to Foundation requesting the renewable 2nd year award winner funds

Typical Award:  up to $750.00

M. Doris Westendorf Celebration of Education Scholarship

  • AWC student taking a minimum of six credit per semester
  • Can be a Declared Nursing Major or enrolled in Nursing Program
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be a Yuma County resident
  • Essay Submission (400 words minimum): “Why Do You Want to Become a Nurse" is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  Tuition, Book store Voucher as need, plus $500.00 cash per semester

Mauratt Endowed Science and Nursing Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC Student
  • Declared major in Science or has been accepted into the Nursing Program
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Student must demonstrate financial need
  • Essay Submission: “Explain Your Dedication to Your Field of Learning and How Financial Assistance Will Help” is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection and may follow to NAU-Yuma, UA-Yuma with a four year degree limit

Typical Award:  up to $1,000.00

National Bank of Arizona “Scholastic” Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Financial need as determined by FAFSA Pell Grant 
  • Please indicate if you are a National Bank employee or dependent of an employee in application question: “Other areas you would like us to consider"
  • Essay Submission (400-475 words): “What are Your Career Goals, Strengths and Weaknesses, and Why Do You Need this Scholarship Assistance?” is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  up to $1,000.00

Pinnacle Healthcare Scholarship

  • AWC student who is enrolled in at least nine credit hours
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher to qualify
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication if GPA has been raised to 2.75 or higher (if funds are available)
  • Essay Submission (500 words maximum): “Summarize Your Academic Goals and Explain Why Education is Important to Your Future” is required

Typical Award:  up to $500

 Richard M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student whose career goal is to become an English teacher
  • Declared major in English, Education, or have expressed an interest in either field with a special interest in learning difficulties  
  • Preference goes to a student who has completed more than 30 credit hours
  • Essay Submission: (1000 word) "Why I Want to Be an English Teacher" is required 

Typical Award:  up to $1,000.00

 Robert A. Reid and Pamela Honaker Scholarship

  • Full-time or part-time AWC student
  • Declared major in Nursing, Agriculture, Biology, or Science
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Student must demonstrate financial needIndicate financial need in application question: “Other information you would like us to consider” in order to qualify
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Essay Submission: "What are Your Lifelong Goals" is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Robert J. Moody Memorial Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Declared Agriculture Major or plans to pursue a degree that is related to Agriculture

 Rotaract Club Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must be a member of the Rotaract Club
  • Community service is required. Please indicated this in application
  • Essay Submission: “Why is Community Service Important and How Have You Served the Community” is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

 Skills USA – Automotive Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Declared Automotive Technology Major
  • 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Priority is given to Yuma High School Skills USA program graduates
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  up to $500

Sunbelt Communications Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC Student
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Graduated from a high school in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, or Wyoming
  • Student must demonstrate financial needIndicate financial need in application question: “Other information you would like us to consider” in order to qualify
  • Student must be actively involved in performing arts, band, choir, theater, broadcasting (or related field), student athletics, or student leadership. Please indicated this in application
  • Preference will be given to Broadcasting Majors
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

 SunnySide Construction Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Declared major in Construction Trades, Psychology, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, or Nursing
  • Essay submission: "How Can You Stay ‘Green’ and Still Use a Washing Machine?" is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection and may follow to NAU-Yuma, UA-Yuma 

Typical Award:  up to $500.00

 Susan Hunt Skills USA Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be a current Skills USA member and was also a member their senior year of high school.  Please indicate in application question: “Other information you would like us to consider” in order to qualify
  • Student must be majoring in one of the following: Career Technical Programs: Administration of Justice, Construction Trades, Licensed Massage Therapy, Nursing Assistant Program, Public Safety (Fire, Police, EMT, etc...), Radiology Technology, or Culinary Arts 
  • Must be a graduate from a Yuma or La Paz County high School within the past two years
  • Scholarship is not renewable

Typical Award:  up to $1,000.00

 Sylvia Plotts Memorial Scholarship

  • Full-time Native American AWC student (must submit proof of American Indian Heritage with application in order to qualify)
  • GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Student must be a resident of Yuma or La Paz County
  • Preference will be given to Native Americans indigenous to the Yuma and La Paz Area
  • Essay Submission: "How Has Your Culture Influenced Your Life, and What are Your Career Goals" is required
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  Full Tuition Scholarship

 TRAX Engineering Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Declared Major in Engineering or Computer Information Systems for Engineering
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Eligible for English 101 and Math 187
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Essay Submission (500 words minimum): "My Ambitions to be a Computer Technologist Engineer" (or your related field of study) including goals, discipline in the field pursuing, and student's strengths and weakness is required 
  • Special consideration will be given to children of TRAX employees.  Please indicate this in application question: “Other information you would like us to consider” in order to qualify
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  up to $1,000.00

 TRiO Scholarship

  • Full-time AWC student
  • Applicant must have participated in Upward Bound or Educational Talent Search Program for a minimum of two years
  • Essay Submission: "How has Upward Bound or Educational Talent Search Program Helped You Reach Your Educational Goals?" is required.
  • Scholarship is not renewable

Typical Award:  up to $500.00

 Yuma Anesthesia Medical Services Scholarship

  • A Full-time AWC student
  • Must be accepted into the Nursing Program
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Student must have volunteered for YRMC or another Yuma organization and be willing to work at Yuma Regional Medical Center after graduation. Please indicate this in application question: “Other information you would like us to consider” in order to qualify
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  up to $1,300.00

Yuma County Women’s Republican Club “Bea Strong” Scholarship

  • Female
  • Enrolled for at least nine credit hours
  • Declared major in Political Science or Education
  • GPA of 3.2 or higher
  • Live in Yuma County and be a registered Republican (or if under 18, an essay on "Why I Believe in the Republican Party" is required) 
  • Three letters of recommendations from non-family members must be submitted
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  up to $500.00

Yuma County Women’s Republican Club “Nikki Ferguson” Scholarship

  • AWC student (male or female)
  • Enrolled for at least nine credit hours
  • Declared major in Nursing or Education
  • GPA of 3.2 or higher
  • Live in Yuma County and be a registered Republican (or if under 18, an essay on "Why I Believe in the Republican Party" is required)
  • Applicant must have completed at least 10 hours of community service
  • Three letters of recommendation from non-family members must be submitted
  • Scholarship is renewable with reapplication and reselection

Typical Award:  up to $500.00

 Yuma Women’s Reel and Rifle Club Scholarship

  • AWC student who is majoring in Physical Education, Recreation Management, Biology, Geology, or other field which pertains to Environmental Sciences
  • 2.0 GPA or higher
  • Scholarship is not renewable 

Typical Award:  $150.00
